Save Money and Lose Weight

March 30, 2008 at 9:25 pm (Uncategorized)

Have you ever wanted to lose a few pounds while saving on your grocery bill?  It sounds appealing I know, but it’s really not.

The Lucky household has been afflicted with the flu this week.  Serious, not fooling around flu.  Like major puke and poop.  Gross,  I know.  I have washed over 12 sets of bedding (only four beds in the house but it was like the movie Groundhog Day…it just kept repeating itself).

Cupcake (almost 3) is the only one who is back to normal.  The rest of us are barely functioning.  She was so sick that she actually took a napTwo days in a row.

I know we’re just getting to know each other, so you may not realize what a big deal that is.  Since she was 17 months old Cupcake has only taken seven naps.  And two of them were this week.  Seriously, people.  This is big time news.  The worst part was I couldn’t even enjoy the fact that she was napping because we were all so miserably sick.

I hope Sprinkles (15 months) feels better so I can see this smile again soon.

Works for Me Wednesday

March 26, 2008 at 6:41 am (Receipe, Uncategorized, Works for Me Wednesday) (, , )

Have I mentioned that I make super fabulous homemade pizza?  It’s all thanks to a terrific recipe I found for pizza crust.  Let’s just say it’s “the one”.  The one I will use from now on.

Friday night is pizza night at our house.  My husband loves toppings but with two little ones (almost three and 14 months) I often get interrupted while chopping.

A couple weeks ago I discovered I can use my egg slicer to quickly and easily slice mushrooms and black olives.  I already used it for eggs (obviously) and strawberries.  I’m pleasantly surprised at how much time this saves me.

What do you use your egg slicer for?  Anything else I haven’t tried yet?

glass half full

 Life is all about choices.

And sometimes there are too many choices-like why are there 52 kinds of toothpaste and 38 kinds of deodorant to choose from? (If you know the answer to this please enlighten me!)

I think one of the most important choices you make each day is your attitude.

I am generally an upbeat, glass-half-full kind of girl. But sometimes during the meltdowns of a toddler it’s hard to choose a happy attitude.

My soon to be three year old daughter has been trying my patience lately. She has perfected the whine and fake cry. Throw in a very curious 14 month old, a long winter and a broken dishwasher and you have the makings of a bad mood. And once that bad mood starts, it is hard to break its momentum.  (Did I mention that the dishwasher is brand new?)

I am fortunate enough to stay at home with my kids and I wouldn’t change it for the world! But on some bad days I have to take things moment by moment.

When I feel myself quickly slipping into anger I try to remember what kind of example I want to be to my children. I try to follow my own rules…

  • talk nicely

  • don’t shout

  • say please and thank-you

  • take a deep breath if you feel frustrated

  • ask for help if you need it

It’s amazing how positively my children respond to me if I practice what I preach.

I have to wake up each day and CHOOSE my attitude.Yeah, I’m not perfect. I don’t always make the right choices. But as a mother, I will always keep trying.

I *Heart* Free Vacations

March 17, 2008 at 11:41 pm (Uncategorized) (, )

I’m back from a terrific FREE vacation to a water-park hotel.  We had a great but exhausting time.  (Or at least I did.  Dragging two kids, floaties, sippy cups, snacks, swim diapers, pool toys and towels up and down three floors by myself was pretty tiring.  On the up side, I actually lost a pound.)

My husband went to a managerial training for work and we got to tag along.  (Hence the FREE part of the vacation.)  He had meetings from 8 AM to 4 or 5 PM.  I took the girls to the water-park in the mornings for a couple hours and he went with us after supper each night.  The girls were so excited and seemed so grown up!  Cupcake (almost 3) and Sprinkles (14 months) had a blast.  They love the water like their mama.

I am almost unpacked and caught up with laundry.  It’s good to be home.

I caught up on my sleep at the hotel since I didn’t have pesky things like housework to keep me up.

I even got some reading done!  Fabulous.

If my pictures turned out I’ll post some.  The girls were adorable in their swimsuits.  Me?  Not so much.

*UPDATE* Um, yeah.  The water-park is INSIDE the hotel.  I live in the midwest and let me tell ya, it is not outdoor swimming weather.  It snowed four inches today!  Just thought I would clear that up.

The Week of the Did NOTS

March 9, 2008 at 11:18 pm (Uncategorized)

This has been a crazy week.  I have been watching my 16 month old niece (along with my own children (2 3/4 and 14 mo.) every day.   My uncle passed away (I am thankful he is no longer in pain) and I’ve had family here from out of town all week.

So forgive me for not posting this past week.  I have literally not had a moment to myself!

The good news is that my alcoholic recovering alcoholic brother and I did NOT get into any massive fights about his drinking.  And I did NOT lose my temper when my brother tried to give my daughter Sprinkles (14 months) Mountain Dew in a bottle.  (She doesn’t even drink out of a bottle! And she is most definately NOT allowed to drink pop.) But lets just say I DID win that battle.

My children did NOT throw up in the car on the way to or from the funeral (1 hour away).  Did I mention my kids get carsick often?

I did NOT panic and was somehow able to feed 6 extra people with food in my pantry and freezer all week.

And I did NOT wring my sister-in-laws neck.  It was quite successful overall I think.

And just when I would like to get back to posting…I am NOT going to be around for most of the week.  But I did NOT (okay, so I know this is getting annoying but I couldn’t help myself) feel too disappointed because we are going on a mini vacation free of charge.

How do you ask?  My husband has managerial training that happens to be at a hotel that has an indoor waterpark.  Cupcake, Sprinkles and myself are ecstatic!  It should by fun.  My husband has seminars during the day but will partake in the water extravaganza in the evenings.

So I will be back soon with pictures.

Have a great week and do NOT stop reading this blog just because I can be a tad annoying sometimes.

A Bedtime Story by Cupcake

March 2, 2008 at 8:10 pm (Cupcake, Ha ha, Papa (My husband), Uncategorized) (, , )

We had a fun but tiring weekend and Papa (my husband) decided to go to bed early. Cupcake (2 3/4) was also going to bed so he asked her to tuck him in. She pulled the covers up close and asked, “Do you want me to tell you a story?”

She began…

Once upon a time there were butterflies flying in the sky.

And the butterflies were twirling around in the air.

And the sky was dark because it was nighttime.

And then it started to snow from the sky.

And then (at this point Cupcake simultaneously farted (loudly) and noticed a picture from our wedding on the nightstand that she had never seen before) Papa saw Mommy in a beautiful dress that looked like snow because it was white.

Papa interrupted to ask if she had tooted and Cupcake said to pay attention to the story and not worry about the noises her butt was making.

And they all lived happily ever after. The end.

The Gift of Time

February 29, 2008 at 11:12 am (Uncategorized)

Today is a day that doesn’t come around very often.  Leap Year hasn’t happened since 2004.  So what makes today special?  It is a gift that many of us ask for.  It’s the gift of time.

How often have you wished for more time?  To play with your kids, or catch up on laundry, or exercise.

So what are you going to do today with your extra time?

I spent the morning tackling the pile of paper clutter on my desk.  It’s something I have been putting off because I haven’t made the time.

This afternoon I’m meeting my best friend for a long play date with the kids.   Tonight my husband and I are going to have a “living room date”.  We don’t have a babysitter so we’ll wait until the girls go to bed and then have a date in our living room.  A movie, popcorn and snuggling on the couch sounds like a terrific way to end my day.

I hope you are able to make use of your extra time today!

Works for Me Wednesday

February 27, 2008 at 10:24 am (Cleaning/Organizing, Works for Me Wednesday) (, , , )

Job Jar

Picking up toys is the bane of my existence.  Ok, not really, but it does drive me crazy.  Cupcake (2 1/2) and Sprinkles (13 mo.) love to play but didn’t think picking up was much fun.

So I made a “job jar”. I used a container my hand could fit into and that also had a lid.  (I used a baby food cereal can.)  I wrote out different jobs on colored paper, cut them into slips and put them in the jar.

Some examples of jobs are:

  • Pick up dress up clothes and put them in the toy box
  • Pick up Barbies and put them in the toy bin
  • Put books back on bookshelf
  • Put together puzzles and store on shelf

The girls pick a job or two before lunch and bedtime.  They are very cooperative if I help.  Sometimes it would be quicker to do it myself, but I really want them to learn how to pick up after themselves.  So I am taking the time now to teach them and they are eager to learn at this age.

They are usually excited to take a turn picking a job and “getting” to pick up their toys.  It’s working like a charm for now.

February 26, 2008 at 10:00 am (Secrets) ()

I really poured my heart out in a post about keeping big secrets from loved ones earlier.  I almost took it down because I feel so vulnerable putting it out there for the whole world to see.

And although I keep flip flopping between feeling silly for posting it and feeling relieved, I am going to leave it up.

Thanks for your comments and support.

I have decided to work through my issues before I involve others.  I need to come to terms with my past and forgive myself.  Then I will decide if my family should know.  I think it would be unfair to myself and my family to tell them about my past and not be able to answer their questions.  Because truthfully, I can’t answer my own questions about it.

Please keep commenting through my e-mail (momentsofmotherhood at yahoo dot com) or comments section if you have something to add.   And I know it’s annoying to read something like this and not have me share the whole story but I’m just not ready yet.

Thanks for “listening”!
